Steam Rail Video

Me at the ripe old age of 74
Me at the ripe old age of 74

In my very young days back in the late fifties and early sixties, I was one of the fortunate of a generation that was lucky, or unlucky, (however you would view it yourself,) enough to have witnessed the passing of steam traction, and the transition of diesel power to British metals.

Myself and my school pals would venture off to places like Crewe and Doncaster on Saturdays when we could, permits were acquired for works visits, and when we could not get them, we just hopped over and under fences to see all manner of locos in various states of repair, it was an adventure too, because we travelled and taught ourselves, albeit unwittingly about places and people.

The names that the loco’s carried were mesmerising, and curiosity lead us to enquire more information about what these names meant, leading once again to an education that we weren’t taught in school, I learned more about the world and it’s people than I ever could have at school, and shall be thankful for that forever.
